547 Signal Troop in Vietnam, 1966 to 1971
In 1966, Prime Minister Harold Holt announced an increase in Australia’s contribution to the defence of South Vietnam. A signals intelligence support unit – 547 Signal Troop – was deployed to Vietnam following this announcement. 547 Signal Troop intercepted enemy (Viet Cong) communications, and identified and located enemy radio transmitters through direction-finding from airborne and ground-based facilities. Tactical intelligence was then produced for the Australian Task Force Commander in Vietnam. 547 Signal Troop worked as part of an integrated, cohesive effort with US Direct Support Units.
547 Signal Troop started out as a small team of 15 Australian Military Forces personnel deployed to Nui Dat. Personnel numbers grew to 35 by the end of 1967, as 547 Signal Troop established itself as a lead Direct Support Unit in the overall effort in Vietnam.
